Steve Hallisy and Ted Birkedal, standing, and Ben sitting at the ruin of the larger of two cabins that college professor Frank Loud built at Jones Park in the mountains near Colorado Springs, Colorado, in the 1880s. The boxer dog belonged to Don Black, who took the photo in April of 1961. There’s lots more about Ben’s early years in his memoir An Orogenous Life.
